As a few of you know, and many more who couldn't care less, I live just a few miles from Dover's (DE) Monster Mile. As you would imagine, on race week, the traffic around here is pretty heavy. At the conclusion of last night's race and taking my life in my own hands, I ventured out to Route 13 to capture a few images of the steady flow of traffic as they headed back to Hometown, USA.

Although I got rained out of good picture opportunities, I had a blast at the Maryland Renaissance Festival yesterday. I had a chance to spend the day with my newest nephew-in-law as we both took in the sights and sounds of 16th century England.

Stepping Back to the 16th Century


Just realized that I am going to have a chance to take in the Maryland Renaissance Festival tomorrow. While my wife attends a bridal shower near Easton, Maryland I am going to hop over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and check out the pirate weekend during my first ever renfaire experience. For some odd reason, I am really looking forward to this.

Look for my followup post on Sunday and, hopefully, I will have some good photos to share providing my pirate eye patch doesn't interfere with my sight too much.

Four score and seven years ago . ..




One can not walk the battlefields of Gettysburg without a personal reflection on the huge sacrifices and monumental importance of what happened here almost a century and a half ago. I truly felt a connection to the 51,000 soldiers who lost their lives or sacrificed a piece of their soul on this hallowed ground over the course of those three days in 1863.

Although I've been to Gettysburg several times over the years, it was not since I was a little kid that I walked the battlefield and stood on Little Round Top. It brought back some wonderful memories of the past and offered up a chance to create a few new ones. God Bless America.

Below is the text of President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address given at the dedication of the National Cemetary.

"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate...we can not consecrate...we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government: of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

PhotoWalk: The Ramble in New Castle


What is a PhotoWalk you ask?
  • Photowalking is the act of walking with a camera for the main purpose of taking pictures of things that the photographer may find interesting.

  • It’s a social photography event where photographers get together, usually in a downtown area or trendy section of town, to walk around, shoot photos, and generally have fun with other photographers.

Sunday, October 11, from 4:15pm until dusk (approx 6:15), we will PhotoWalk the historic town of New Castle DE.

  • There is NO charge to attend this event.
  • We will meet, and park, near "The Green" at the corner of Delaware and Third Streets.
  • Pre-registration not necessary, but helpful. Drop me an email here.

Walk this Way





What a fun night last evening in Chesapeake City , MD. Almost a dozen of us gathered for a PhotoWalk through this quaint little town nestled on the C&D canal connecting the Delaware River and the Chesapeake Bay.

Had a chance to visit the Nanticoke Pow Wow in Millsboro, Delaware this past weekend. The weather was overcast, the terrain was a little muddy, but the experience was amazing!

What a beautiful legacy Native Americans have. All the pageantry and splendor passed on from generation to generation. It's a just a beautiful thing to witness.

Taking Pictures in Public is Not as Simple as 1-2-3


Taking pictures of people in public and of public property, especially since 9-11, has taken on a whole new meaning. Knowing what you can and cannot photograph has never been more important to the amateur shutterbug.

The following link is an article, printed in USA Today, from the digital goddess, Kim Komando. I think it's a good starter place to raise your awareness level and keep you out of hot water. Read the story and take the quiz, "Think twice before taking pictures in public" here.

And Oregon attorney Bert Krages has published a photographer's Bill of Rights; a pretty good guide on what to do when, and if, confronted by the law enforcement about your photography habits. Read it here.

PhotoWalk Chesapeake City, MD

Please make plans now to join us for a family photo experience Sunday night as we walk the enchanting town of Chesapeake City, Maryland.

We will meet at 5:15pm at the gazebo in center city, near the marina, and then head out on a leisurely stroll to take in the sights, sound and aroma of this quaint little town by the canal. All skill levels welcome and their is NO cost associated with this event. Sunset will be around 7:15pm which will conclude the official walk.

Hawkeye Pierce



Technically, not great photos, but I was very impressed watching this red-tailed hawk take flight in Townsend the other day.

I also believe this to be the same species which I had mis-identified earlier in my posts as a juvenile eagle.
